Periyar wild life sanctuary is 900m above sea level and said to offer the visitor the best chance to see wild elephant in the whole of India . The sanctuary is part of Project Tiger, but unfortunately these animals are rarely seen here.

The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is situated on the banks of the Periyar lake - an artificial lake, and thick evergreen forest. Here the high ranges of the Western Ghats are clothed in dense evergreen, moist deciduous forests and savannah grass lands. Although it is unusual to see many animals , still you spot a family of Elephants, Wild Boar, and Sambar Deer by the water's edge. Today morning after breakfast visit the natural habitat of the Niligiri tahr , Rajamala is 2695 m above sea level, which was established in 1978 to protect the Nilgiri Tahr, the only mountain goat south of the Himalaya. The Niligiri tahr in Rajamala are now to be found in small herds found in Eravikulam-Rajamala region.( visiting time morning 0700hrs till evening 1800hrs and visitors are not allowed during the monsoon/ Eravikulam National parkremains closed from mid January to end of February as this is Nil Tar breeding period )

Visit Pothenmedu -an excellent view of the tea, coffee and cardamom plantations in Munnar. The rolling hills, the lush mountain and the breathtaking scenery here is ideal for trekking and long mountain walks and Devikulam -the idyllic hill station with its velvet lawns, exotic flora and fauna and the cool mountain air is a rare experience.
