Kettuvallams or rice barges converted to houseboats are a unique feature of the Kerala Backwaters. These boats were originally used for transporting rice and other goods and are traditionally made of Anjli wood, bamboo and coir. The boats move slowly along the waterways, covering approximately 20 km per day. Meals are cooked and taken on board and traditional Kerala food is served. Your boat is always exclusive to you (ie the only other people on board will be the crew) and you can choose a boat with or without air-conditioning in the bedroom at night. There are also a few premium boats available with the option of air-conditioning during the day as well. The boats can cater for up to two, four, six or eight guests.
